Speed friending

Especially at the beginning of a new course, it’s a good idea to spend time on team-building activities. In the speed friending exercise, language learners get to know each other. The exercise is quite fast-paced, and the goal is to have short conversation sessions with changing partners, so that everyone can meet as many people as possible. At the same time, students also get to move around the classroom.

If the students don’t know each other well yet, the exercise can also include learning each other’s names: when paired with someone new, participants introduce themselves before discussing the topic.

This type of activity can also be used when the group members already know each other well. In that case, questions can focus on current topics, allowing everyone to share their opinions.

Instructions for this exercise

Students sit/stand in two concentric circles facing each other, with each student having a partner from the other circle. The teacher asks or displays a question on the screen. The partners discuss the question for 5 minutes. When the time is up, the teacher instructs the students in the outer circle to move one seat to the left, while the inner circle remains in place. This creates new pairs. The teacher asks a new question, and the pairs discuss it for 5 minutes. Then the outer circle moves one seat to the left again. This can continue for a full round or several rounds, depending on the size of the group.

What do you like to do on your free time?
Where would you like to travel? Why?
What was your dream job as a kid?
What is your favorite movie? Why?
Which new skill would you like to learn?
What is your biggest dream?
What is you favorite place in this city?
What would you do if you had a million euros?
What is your favorite food? How about least favorite?
What is the funniest word in [the target language]?
What would you take to a deserted island (5 things)?

Tip for teachers: Make up your own questions, based on the group’s age, language level etc.

Speed friending

Erityisesti uuden kurssin alkaessa kannattaa käyttää aikaa ryhmäyttämiseen. Speed friending -harjoituksessa kielenoppijat pääsevät tutustumaan toisiinsa. Harjoitus on melko nopeatempoinen, ja tarkoituksena on saada aikaan lyhyet porinatuokiot vaihtuvien parien kanssa niin, että jokainen pääsee tutustumaan mahdollisimman moneen ihmiseen. Samalla opiskelijat pääsevät myös liikkumaan luokassa.

Jos opiskelijat eivät tunne vielä toisiaan hyvin, harjoitukseen voi sisällyttää myös nimien opettelun: uuden parin kanssa esittäydytään ennen aiheesta keskustelua.

Tehtävätyyppiä voi käyttää myös silloin, kun ryhmäläiset tuntevat toisensa jo hyvin. Silloin kysymyksiksi voi valita esim. ajankohtaisia aiheita, joista kukin saa kertoa mielipiteensä.

Opiskelijat istuvat/seisovat kahdessa sisäkkäisessä ringissä kasvokkain niin, että jokaisella on pari toisesta ringistä. Opettaja kysyy kysymyksen tai heijastaa sen valkokankaalle. Parit keskustelevat kysymyksestä 5 minuutin ajan. Kun aika loppuu, opettaja ohjeistaa ulkoringissä olevia siirtymään yhden paikan vasemmalle. Sisärinki pysyy paikallaan. Näin muodostuu uudet parit. Opettaja kysyy uuden kysymyksen, josta keskustellaan taas 5 minuuttia. Sen jälkeen ulkorinki liikkuu taas yhden paikan vasemmalle. Tätä voidaan jatkaa kokonainen kierros tai useampi kierros, ryhmän koosta riippuen.
